Hamburg Group Transport Between Airport, CCH and Harbour

Hamburg is compact: the airport is about 11 km from the Rathaus and the CCH sits beside an ICE stop. The planning work lies in the coach places, which are many but small.

Two coach areas at the airport

Hamburg Airport has a signed coach area for each terminal, "Reisebusse T1" and "Reisebusse T2", with no height limit. At the barrier a ticket is issued when space is free, and the stay is paid before exit. Operators that hold the airport's coach card and register in advance may also use the exclusive zone on the arrivals level, reached by the "Transfer Parken" lane.

Allow 20 to 25 minutes to the centre in light traffic. When a delegation lands on several flights, time the coach for the main wave; stragglers can take the S1, which runs from both terminals to the Hauptbahnhof every 10 minutes in about 25 minutes.

Messe, CCH and Dammtor

The Hamburg Messe and the CCH share a site beside Planten un Blomen, and Hamburg Dammtor, served by ICE and IC trains, is directly next to the congress centre. The coach places there are for set-down and pickup only: four on Rentzelstraße at the Heinrich-Hertz-Turm and three on Theodor-Heuss-Platz opposite the station.

With seven loading places in total, a large congress needs staggered arrivals. Send session start times and hotel addresses, and the plan spaces coaches a few minutes apart instead of sending one convoy.

Airports feeding Hamburg

Messe and congress venues

  • CCH - Congress Center Hamburg — Congress centre at Congressplatz 1 (Tiergartenstraße 2), 20355 Hamburg, beside Planten un Blomen and the Messe. It reopened in April 2022 after a full modernisation (closed from 2016/2017); about 50 rooms on four levels and up to 12,000 people at once. Hamburg Dammtor station is directly next to it; U-Bahn Stephansplatz (Oper / CCH) and Gänsemarkt are a short walk. A coach stop for set-down and pick-up only (3 coaches) is on Theodor-Heuss-Platz opposite Dammtor station
  • Hamburg Messe — Exhibition grounds at Messeplatz 1 (navigation address Rentzelstraße 70), 20357 Hamburg, next to Planten un Blomen park and the CCH. Parking on and around the grounds is limited and the Messe recommends public transport. A coach stop for set-down and pick-up only (4 coaches) is on Rentzelstraße at the Messe / Heinrich-Hertz-Turm

Cruise berths in range

No sticker, but closures

Hamburg has no Umweltzone, and since 2023 the diesel bans in Altona are gone, so any coach may drive in the city. Roadworks are the real risk: the A7 through the Elbtunnel has had weekend full closures and more are possible. Check the motorway status before a Friday or Monday airport run.

Hotels, harbour and HafenCity

By the Hauptbahnhof, Kirchenallee has two coach stops for up to 10 minutes, and the ZOB opposite has paid places, bookable hourly or daily. In HafenCity, Am Sandtorkai 62–73 handles set-down for the Speicherstadt. The Elbphilharmonie names no coach stop, so the operator confirms the nearest place; groups of 10 or more book Plaza tickets online in advance.

Coaches serving the HafenCity cruise terminal must be registered in advance in the Überseequartier booking system. Take the terminal name from the cruise documents, not from memory.

Planner questions

Which station suits a Messe or CCH group?

Hamburg Dammtor: ICE and IC trains stop beside the CCH, close to the Messe. Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, with the ZOB opposite, suits hotels in St. Georg and the Altstadt.

Can a coach stay overnight in the centre?

The Heiligengeistfeld in St. Pauli has reservable coach parking, three places with power, and sleeping on board for up to 3 nights. It is often unavailable during the Hamburger Dom fair.

How do coaches reach the Volksparkstadion or Barclays Arena?

The stadium coach park is on Schnackenburgallee. For the arena, coaches use the car parks off Hellgrundweg, which open about 2 hours before doors; Uwe-Seeler-Allee is closed on event days except to shuttle buses.
