Group Transfers to Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg keeps coaches outside its walls. For a tour group or an incentive stop, that means a set-down at the large car parks near the A7 and a few minutes' walk to the gates.

Parking outside the walls

Coaches are directed to the Großraumparkplätze outside the walls, namely P1 (Friedrich-Hörner-Weg) and P3 (Schweinsdorfer Straße); P2 on the Nördlinger Straße is closed to anything over 7.5 t. From the A7 between Würzburg and Ulm, exit 108 "Rothenburg/Tauber" leaves about 2 km to the car parks, and the walls are a few minutes on foot from there.

Day visitors are always set down outside. Build the walk into the timings and agree with the guide which gate the group enters.

Hotel arrivals and the BusVignette

A coach may enter the old town only to bring hotel guests and luggage on arrival or collect them on departure, and only with a BusVignette. It is issued to the coach company for a year and allows the set route to the Schrannenplatz. In the inner core the hotel itself makes the application, and its staff, wearing high-visibility vests, marshal the coach through turns and reversing.

Inside the old town, the height limit is 3.90 m; coaches of 3.70 m or more pass the Galgentor only at walking pace within the white dashed lines, and a night driving ban applies in the core from 19:00 to 06:00. A late check-in therefore unloads outside.

Hotel districts for pickups

  • Just outside the gates near the large car parks
  • Inside the walls (Altstadt)
  • Dinkelsbühl or Würzburg for larger groups

Days when the town closes

On days when traffic is barred from the old town, the BusVignette lapses: Pentecost, the Reichsstadttage, Stadtmosphäre and the whole Reiterlesmarkt (20 November to 23 December 2026). Short-notice closures happen too, so the status is checked just before travel and luggage may need its own handling.

Romantic Road timings

Rothenburg is the name most people know on the 460 km Romantic Road between Würzburg and Füssen. Southwards, Dinkelsbühl is about 40 minutes and Nördlingen a little over an hour; northwards, the Würzburg Residenz is about 50 minutes. A private coach can follow the whole route; by motorway, Füssen is about 247 km, around 2 h 25 min.

Nuremberg Airport (NUE) is about 82 km, roughly 1 h 20 min; Stuttgart (about 152 km) and Frankfurt (FRA, about 188 km) each take just under two hours. No low-emission zone applies in Rothenburg.

Planner questions

Can the coach take the group to the Marktplatz?

No. Day visitors leave the coach at the car parks beyond the walls; only hotel arrivals and departures with a BusVignette go in.

Is the hotel-arrival permit valid during the Christmas market?

No. It is suspended during the Reiterlesmarkt and on other closure days, so guests and luggage unload outside the walls.

Which airport suits a Rothenburg group?

Nürnberg is nearest, at about 1 h 20 min. Frankfurt and Stuttgart both take just under two hours by road.
