Group Transport in Freiburg and the Black Forest

Freiburg's nearest large airport is in France, its old town takes guided groups of 25 at most, and the Black Forest roads begin at the city edge. Each of these shapes the transfer plan.

Airports on three sides

EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL) is on the French side of the border by Basel; the Münster is about 74 km and roughly an hour away. Zürich (ZRH) is about 159 km and Stuttgart (STR) about 206 km, around 1 h 50 and 2 h 5 min. Delegations often split across all three, so collect flight numbers early and group the arrivals by airport.

Any coach above 3.5 t with a non-Swiss registration owes Switzerland's flat-rate heavy vehicle charge (PSVA) for each day it is in the country, even when parked, settled in advance through the Swiss customs portal. A Zürich collection or a Basel routing therefore belongs in the quote from the outset.

Messe, Konzerthaus and the old town

Messe Freiburg is at the Neuer Messplatz in the north-west, about 4 km from the Münster and close to the Europa-Park Stadion; the Konzerthaus is in the centre by the Hauptbahnhof. A conference split between the two needs a short loop rather than one transfer.

Signs guide coaches to the Schreiberanlage (3 spaces) and the larger Karlsplatz (10 spaces), both beside the pedestrian zone, where the group alights. The tourist board asks for no more than 25 per group in the narrow lanes, so a full coach becomes two guided groups with staggered starts. The city dropped its Umweltzone in spring 2025, though a 30 km/h noise limit applies on the B31 through the city.

Black Forest roads

Titisee is about 35 minutes east, the Feldberg and the open-air museum Vogtsbauernhof in Gutach about 45. The Höllental road and the climbs to the Feldberg and Schauinsland are mountain roads, and once there is ice or snow, winter tyres are compulsory; a coach needs them at minimum on its driven axles and front steering axles. The Schauinslandbahn runs only in suitable weather, so keep an alternative ready.

Across the Rhine into France

Colmar takes about 50 minutes, Strasbourg about 1 h 5 min. In Strasbourg, the ZFE covers all 33 communes of the Eurométropole and requires a French Crit'Air sticker; the German Umweltplakette does not replace it, and the quote confirms the coach carries the right one.

Planner questions

Which airport should a Freiburg group fly into?

BSL is closest, at about an hour by road. Zürich and Stuttgart add distance, and Zürich also brings the Swiss heavy vehicle charge for a coach registered elsewhere.

Can 50 delegates tour the old town together?

Not as one party. The tourist board asks for 25 at most, so plan two guides and stagger the start times.

Is a sticker needed to drive into Freiburg?

No; the city has had no zone since 2025. A trip on to Strasbourg needs a French Crit'Air sticker.
