Group Transport to Neuschwanstein and Füssen

Neuschwanstein runs to the minute: each tour leaves at its printed entry time, and a group that arrives late forfeits it. Transfers here are planned backwards from that slot, with generous buffers.

Tickets before vehicles

Every visit to the castle is a guided tour of roughly half an hour, starting at a set entry time. Two places sell tickets: the official online shop and the Hohenschwangau ticket centre at Alpseestraße 12; the castle itself sells none. Over-the-counter tickets cover only the same day and in the summer season frequently sell out early, so reserve online well ahead and fix the transfer once the entry time is known.

Plan to reach Hohenschwangau a good 1.5 to 2 hours ahead of the Neuschwanstein entry time, which is the ticket centre's own advice, and an hour or more ahead of a Hohenschwangau castle tour. Bags, prams and baby carriers stay on the coach.

P1, P4 and the climb

Coaches park only in P1 and P4 at Hohenschwangau. Stopping is banned outright along the street and outside the ticket centre, so there is no drop-off at the door, and no vehicle drives up to the castles.

On foot from the village, the castle is 30 to 40 minutes away, a steep climb of about 1.5 km. From P4 a shuttle bus runs about every 20 minutes to the viewpoint by the Marienbrücke, a 15-minute ride, leaving about 500 m downhill to the castle. It cannot be reserved and does not run on snow or ice, so in winter the walk is the plan.

Airports feeding Füssen

From Munich or Memmingen

Munich Airport is about 161 km away, a drive of around 1 h 50 min off-peak, and Memmingen Airport (FMM) about 83 km, about 55 minutes. A day trip from Munich covers around 260 km, within the EU drivers' hours rules: at most 9 hours' driving a day (10 on two days a week), with a pause of 45 minutes once 4.5 hours have been driven. A late tour slot can stretch that day, and the quote says how it is covered.

Staying in Füssen

In Füssen, coaches use the paid parks P1 Festplatz (about 40 coaches), P3 Morisse (about 10, five minutes from the old town), P7 by the harbour where the Forggensee boats leave and P8 at the Festspielhaus Neuschwanstein, which also hosts events. The old town is closed to vehicles over 7.5 t, and there is no low-emission zone.

For Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the quickest road runs via Reutte in Austria; staying in Germany means the Oberammergau road, about 67 km and 1 h 10 min.

Planner questions

Can the coach drop the group at the ticket centre?

No. The street in front of it is an absolute no-stopping zone. Coaches set down and park in P1 or P4.

What if the group misses its entry time?

The tour is lost, because tours do not wait. That is what the buffers in the transfer plan are for.

Does the shuttle bus run in winter?

Not on snowy or icy roads. Plan the walk of 30 to 40 minutes instead, with suitable footwear.
