Group Transport in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and on the Zugspitze

In Garmisch-Partenkirchen the mountain sets the timetable. A group goes up one way and comes down another, so the coach has to be where the group comes down, not where it went up.

Up by rail, down by cable car

The Zugspitze round trip starts at the Zugspitzbahn station in Garmisch. The cogwheel train climbs past Grainau and the Eibsee and then through a 4.5 km tunnel to the Zugspitzplatt, from where the Gletscherbahn lifts the group to the summit at 2,962 m, and the Seilbahn Zugspitze descends to the Eibsee. The usual group plan sets down in Garmisch and collects at the Eibsee valley station.

From 15 people, group rates apply, and coaches park free at the valley stations if the group is booked via the railway's online group form. Access to the Eibsee is by a single road, and on fine summer days its car parks are full early; the railway advises arriving before 10:00.

Arriving in the valley

Munich Airport is about 136 km away, some 1 h 35 min off-peak, and central Munich about 90 km. Trains from Munich arrive in the town centre. There is no low-emission zone, and no official coach stop or coach park list was found for the town, so the set-down and waiting spot are agreed with the operator.

A Zugspitze day from Munich is roughly 200 km on the road plus the hours spent on the mountain. Driving time falls under the EU rules: 9 hours behind the wheel per day, extendable to 10 on two days a week, with 45 minutes' rest due after every 4.5 hours of driving. Weather on the summit can stretch the day, so the quote fixes a pick-up window.

Hotel districts for pickups

  • Partenkirchen (Ludwigstraße)
  • Oberammergau and Ettal for Linderhof and the Passion Play
  • Garmisch (around the Marienplatz and the station)
  • Grainau (near the Eibsee and the Zugspitze)

Linderhof, Ettal and Oberammergau

Schloss Linderhof has about 14 coach spaces on site, reached by the A95 and B2 to Oberau, the B23 to Ettal and the ST2060. Opening hours are 09:00 to 18:00 between 15 April and 15 October and 10:00 to 16:30 otherwise, when most park buildings close. Ettal Abbey lies on the way; Oberammergau is about 25 minutes from Garmisch.

The shortest road to Neuschwanstein crosses Austria; the all-German route via Oberammergau is about 65 km.

Winter roads and the gorge

When roads are icy or snowy, winter tyres become a legal requirement in Germany, for a coach at least on the driven axles and the front steering axles. The New Year ski jump each 1 January brings very heavy traffic around the Olympia-Skistadion. The Partnachklamm starts nearby; it has no phone reception, so groups load their QR-code tickets beforehand, and path works mean its status is checked before booking.

Planner questions

Where should the coach wait during a Zugspitze trip?

At the Eibsee valley station if the group descends by the Seilbahn. Agree a pick-up window, as the Eibsee road congests in summer.

Can a coach use the public Eibsee car park?

No: it has a 2.10 m height limit. Coach parking at the valley stations comes through the railway's group booking.

Does the route to Neuschwanstein have to cross Austria?

No. The shortest road does, but the all-German road via Oberammergau is about 65 km, around 1 h 10 min.
