Munich Group Transfers: Airport, Riem and the Altstadt

Munich's airport lies 39 km out and its Messe sits on the eastern edge, so most group days begin with a long road leg. Plan that leg first and fit the city around it.

The long run from MUC

Munich Airport is about 39 km from Marienplatz, about 40 minutes when the roads are clear and much longer at peak times. Commercial coaches use barrier-controlled areas in the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 forecourts, set aside for bus traffic. No group meeting point is published, so where the group gathers and where the coach waits are agreed with the operator at booking.

For longer waits the airport sends coaches to coach park P53 at the Besucherpark. The ordinary car parks take 2.00 m at most, so a coach holds at P53 and is called forward against the landing time.

Messestadt Riem and the ICM

Messe München and the ICM congress centre are in Messestadt Riem on the A94. Busterminal Messestadt Ost on Willy-Brandt-Allee is next to the grounds and outside the Umweltzone; stops there are limited to 30 minutes. Registering at least 24 hours ahead is strongly advised, with a Thursday 15:00 cut-off for anything arriving Saturday to Monday.

During fairs a guidance system directs traffic and access to the entrances is restricted, so a hotel shuttle needs a fixed loading point. U2 reaches the Hauptbahnhof in under 20 minutes, a useful fallback at peak hours. The MOC in Freimann is a separate venue near U6 Kieferngarten; check which one your event uses.

Messe and congress venues

  • ICM - International Congress Center Messe München — Congress centre built into the Messe München grounds in Messestadt Riem; the taxi rank for the grounds is in front of the ICM. The CCN - Conference Center North is also on the Riem grounds
  • Messe München (Trade Fair Center Messe München) — Exhibition grounds in Messestadt Riem, east Munich, directly on the A94 (exits Feldkirchen-West, no. 6, and München-Riem, no. 5). U-Bahn U2 stops Messestadt West and Messestadt Ost serve the grounds, under 20 minutes from Hauptbahnhof without changing. During fairs a traffic guidance system directs vehicles to the open car parks, and access in front of the entrances is restricted. The Busterminal Messestadt Ost (Willy-Brandt-Allee 11) is next to the grounds, outside the Umweltzone
  • MOC - Event Center Messe München — Event and trade-show centre on Lilienthalallee in the north of Munich. By road: A9, exit München-Freimann (no. 74), then Heidemannstraße and left into Lilienthalallee after about 500 m. About 5 minutes on foot from U-Bahn U6 Kieferngarten

Sticker and diesel rules

The Umweltzone starts at the Mittlerer Ring, the ring road included. Only vehicles with a green sticker may enter, foreign coaches included, and diesel vehicles of Euro 4/IV or older are barred even with the sticker. Tour coaches have no general exemption, so the quote states the emission standard. Both coach terminals, Fröttmaning and Messestadt Ost, lie outside the zone.

Old-town drops and Oktoberfest

Coaches cannot park in the Altstadt. They set down on the Altstadtring, mostly for up to 20 minutes: Frauenstraße 19 for Marienplatz and the Hofbräuhaus, Maximiliansplatz 23 for the Frauenkirche. Hansastraße 51 is the central coach park, with U-Bahn Heimeranplatz close by. The Hauptbahnhof is being rebuilt, so leave extra minutes when meeting a group off an ICE.

During the Oktoberfest a closed ring surrounds the Theresienwiese and no coach may set down near it. Coaches go to the city's designated sites and the group rides the U-Bahn in; which sites apply that year is confirmed when booking.

Planner questions

Is the S-Bahn quicker than a coach from the airport?

S1 and S8 together run every 10 minutes and take about 40 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof. A coach keeps people and luggage together and goes straight to the hotel or the Messe.

Where does a coach wait for an Allianz Arena match?

Busterminal Fröttmaning is nearby, with 36 coach spaces and U6 into town. The operator confirms the set-down point for the stadium itself.

Can we hold an event at the Olympiastadion?

Not for now: it closed in September 2025 for renovation expected to take two to three years. The SAP Garden and Olympiahalle are open, and Spiridon-Louis-Ring 3 has 30 coach spaces, restricted during large events.
