Heidelberg Group Transport: Airports, Congress and Castle

Heidelberg has no airport of its own. Most groups land at Frankfurt, about 84 km away, and the congress centre stands beside the Hauptbahnhof, so a typical day is one long transfer followed by short city hops.

The transfer from Frankfurt or Stuttgart

Frankfurt Airport is about 84 km from the Altstadt, about 1.25 hours by coach in light traffic; Stuttgart Airport is about 128 km, about 1.75 hours. At FRA, coaches load at P36 beside Terminal 1. By train, the airport is about 60 minutes away with a change in Mannheim, which suits small groups travelling light.

Peak traffic can add a great deal to the road leg. Send flight numbers with the request, so the pickup is timed from the scheduled landing and the hotel knows when to expect the group.

Congress in the Bahnstadt

Heidelberg's congress centre opened in April 2024 at Czernyring 20, a minute's walk from the Hauptbahnhof, which has ICE and IC/EC trains. Its largest hall holds up to 1,800. No coach stop is published for it, so the operator confirms where coaches set down. With room for 35 coaches and advance reservations, Busparkplatz Bahnstadt (Speyerer Straße) is the obvious staging point for congress shuttles.

Hotels in the Bahnstadt and around Bismarckplatz keep delegates close to both the congress and the trams; the Altstadt is about 10 minutes from the station by tram or bus.

  • Heidelberg Congress Center — Congress centre opened in April 2024 at Czernyring 20 in the Bahnstadt, a one-minute walk from Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof; up to 1,800 people in Hall 1 and about 3,800 seats in 10 halls and rooms. Underground car park P21. Trams and buses stop at Hauptbahnhof Süd

Into the Altstadt

Coaches drop at the Neckarmünzplatz beside the Tourist Information, the city's official set-down: a short stop to let people on and off, then the coach must leave or risk being towed. It waits at Busparkplatz Karlstor, about 300 m away, with room for up to 12 coaches but often busy and not bookable, or goes back to the Bahnstadt. Since the Umweltzone ended in March 2023, Heidelberg asks for no sticker at all.

Castle evenings

A coach may drive up to the castle only with a paid reservation for its six-place coach park, which doubles as the access permit, and the road up is shut to coaches from 19:00 to 08:00 unless the city has issued an individual permit. For a castle dinner, plan the drop before 19:00 or use the Bergbahn from Kornmarkt. Note the Bergbahn's planned shutdown from October 2027 to April 2028; a replacement bus covers it.

Planner questions

Does the coach need a green sticker in Heidelberg?

No. Strasbourg is another matter: France requires its own Crit'Air sticker there, and the German one is not accepted in its place.

Where can coaches wait through a congress day?

Busparkplatz Bahnstadt, which takes up to 35 coaches and can be reserved in advance or at short notice.

Can we add Schwetzingen for an evening?

Yes. Schloss Schwetzingen is about 14 km away, around 35 minutes, and the coach can use one of five paid places on the Alter Messplatz, a 300 m walk from the palace.
