Cologne Bonn group transfers: the ZOB, 24-hour notice and the Deutz run
Cologne Bonn Airport handles coaches at its own bus station beside Terminal 2. Register the arrival a day ahead and the coach has a planned bay; leave it late and it takes what is left.
The 24-hour rule
Planned arrivals at the bus station (ZOB, car park P32) must be notified to the airport 24 hours or more in advance. Coaches that have not registered go to bay 10 or 11. For an early Monday arrival, settle the flight details before the weekend, not on Sunday evening.
There are 11 bays, and passengers may get on and off only inside the bus station. The ZOB has its own access road, separate from the central entrance to Terminals 1 and 2, and a covered walkway to the terminal and the railway station.

Bays are for boarding, not waiting
Layovers and drivers' rest breaks are not allowed at the ZOB, engines may not idle and the limit is walking pace. A delayed flight is handled by timing the coach, not by parking it at a bay: the operator holds it elsewhere and brings it in when the group is through. Coaches with trailers use the even-numbered bays.
Drive time to the city
- about 16 km by road to the Kölner Dom, about 20 min in light traffic; longer at peak times
Terminals and arrival levels
- Terminal 2
- Terminal 1
- Köln/Bonn Flughafen railway station, close to both terminals
ICE at the terminal
An ICE station of its own sits close to both terminals, alongside S19, RE6 and an express bus to Bonn Hauptbahnhof. That makes CGN a natural meeting point for a group arriving partly by air and partly by rail. Check the current rail service before building a connection around it.
Koelnmesse, Köln and Bonn
The Kölner Dom is about 16 km by road, about 20 minutes in light traffic. Koelnmesse is in Deutz, on the right bank of the Rhine opposite the Altstadt, next to the station Köln Messe/Deutz, where some ICE trains stop instead of at the Hauptbahnhof. Almost all of Köln, Deutz included, is an Umweltzone requiring the green sticker, coaches included.
Bonn's Markt is about 24 km (about 25 minutes) and the Burgplatz in Düsseldorf about 55 km (about 45 minutes), so a single arrival can feed hotels in all three cities.
Planner questions
Who registers the coach with the airport?
The operator, at least 24 hours before the planned arrival. Unregistered coaches are sent to bay 10 or 11.
Can the coach wait at the bus station if the flight is late?
No. Layovers are not allowed there; the coach is called in to match the real landing.
Where do cars with driver collect passengers?
The airport publishes no waiting area for them. People meeting arrivals are advised to use the car park nearest the terminal, P1 or P2, and agree a meeting point.
