The accessible minibus: wheelchair places and seats
A wheelchair-accessible minibus lets a mixed group travel together, with lift or ramp access and securing points for wheelchairs. Layouts differ, so the vehicle is matched to the passengers.
Layouts and capacity
Wheelchair places replace seats, so the seat count depends on how many wheelchair users travel, and luggage room shrinks as well. Send the number of wheelchair users, whether any can transfer to a seat, and the dimensions of powered chairs.

Seats and luggage
- Seats: Varies by layout; wheelchair positions replace seats
- Luggage: Limited; wheelchair positions reduce luggage room
Rules on the road
Under § 35a StVZO, a passenger who rides seated in their wheelchair must have a wheelchair space fitted with restraints for the chair and for the person. To run at 100 km/h on the motorway, a bus also needs belts at every wheelchair place in use, so journey times are planned on the vehicle as fitted. The driver holds class D1, which covers up to 16 passengers.
The EU assistance rights stop at scheduled lines covering 250 km or more. On a private hire, accessibility is agreed booking by booking, which is why the request needs the detail above.
Planning the stops
A ramp or lift needs space beside or behind the vehicle and a few minutes to deploy. Tell us where the group boards and alights and whether each entrance is step-free. Short set-down bays in city centres leave little slack, so ask the venue for a quieter loading point, and allow a little longer at each stop than for a standard minibus.
Where it is used
Accessible airport and cruise transfers, outings from care homes and day centres, and delegations where one member uses a wheelchair and the group wants to arrive together rather than in separate vehicles.
Planner questions
How many wheelchair places are there?
It varies by layout. The quote states the wheelchair places and the seats for the vehicle offered.
Is there room for luggage on an airport run?
Limited. For a full load of suitcases, consider a second vehicle for the bags.
Who travels with the wheelchair users?
Carers and companions travel as part of your group; count them in the headcount so each has a seat.
