Hamburg Turnaround Days: Ship, Airport and City
Hamburg handles cruise calls at four terminals spread across the port, and a turnaround transfer only holds together once you know which one your ship is using. Start from the terminal on the cruise documents, then hang the airport, rail and hotel runs off the embarkation and disembarkation times.
Know the terminal before the call time
Altona is on the north bank, a single berth for ships up to 300 m. Steinwerder sits across the Elbe on the south bank, with two terminal buildings and its own bus parking; the road approach is signed B62, whether the coach leaves the A7 at Waltershof or the A1/A255 at Freihafen/HafenCity. The HafenCity terminal opened in spring 2025 inside the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, a short walk from the centre. Baakenhöft, further east in HafenCity, is a temporary extra berth with marked areas for coaches and shuttles.
Terminals are allocated call by call, so the plan never infers one from the ship or the line. Your confirmation names the terminal, and the run is checked again if the documents change.

Disembarkation morning, flight afternoon
Hamburg Airport is about 13 km from Altona and HafenCity and about 20 km from Steinwerder: 25 to 35 minutes when the roads are quiet. At the airport, coaches use the signed areas "Reisebusse T1" and "Reisebusse T2" rather than the terminal kerb. When flights are spread over the afternoon, guests are grouped into waves by departure time instead of one coach leaving at the first call and parking a whole group at check-in for hours.
For rail connections the centre is close: Rathausmarkt is about 4 km from HafenCity, 6 km from Altona and 11 km from Steinwerder. Loading cases at the ship usually takes longer than that drive, so the call time allows for it.
Airports for fly-cruise connections
- Hamburg Airport (HAM) — about 25-35 min in light traffic (Altona and HafenCity about 13 km; Steinwerder about 20 km)
Terminals and berths
- Cruise Center Steinwerder, Buchheisterstraße 16, 20457 Hamburg: on the south bank of the Elbe, with two separate terminal buildings for more than 8,000 passengers per call
- Cruise Center Baakenhöft, Baakenhöft 1, 20457 Hamburg: a temporary terminal in the eastern HafenCity with one berth, used as an extra and alternative berth for a planned total of ten years
- Cruise Center Altona, Van-der-Smissen-Straße 5, 22767 Hamburg: one berth for ships up to 300 m long, with a glass-fronted terminal building and a roof terrace
- Cruise Center HafenCity, Überseeboulevard 7, 20457 Hamburg: opened in spring 2025 inside the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, with two berths (345 m and 230 m)
Port-call tours and local links
On a port call, a city tour collects at the terminal and returns well before all-aboard. Independent guests at Steinwerder can ride the 256 bus to Elbbrücken, or walk about 450 m to Argentinienbrücke for the HADAG 73 ferry across to the Landungsbrücken.
Planner questions
Which terminal will our ship use?
The one printed on the cruise documents. The transfer is planned to that terminal and rechecked if the line issues an update.
Can one booking cover the ship and the airport?
Yes. Send the disembarkation group, each flight and the bags per person; each wave gets its own vehicle and call time.
Does a coach need a green sticker in Hamburg?
No. Hamburg has no Umweltzone, and its street diesel bans ended in 2023. Rules change, so the operator checks before travel.
