Kölner Karneval: Group Transport Around Closed Streets
Cologne's street carnival runs from Weiberfastnacht on 4 February to Ash Wednesday on 10 February 2027, with the Rosenmontagszug on 8 February. Large parts of the centre close to traffic, so the transport plan keeps the coach outside the closures and the group moving on foot or by tram.
The dates a programme hangs on
The session opens on 11 November 2026, with the traditional start on the Heumarkt at 09:00. Then comes the street carnival of February 2027: Weiberfastnacht on Thursday 4 February, the Schull- un Veedelszöch on Sunday 7 February, Rosenmontag on 8 February. Each day draws different crowds to different places, so an incentive or hospitality programme names the day before anything else is planned.

Rosenmontag: plan around the closures
The parade starts in the Südstadt (Chlodwigplatz, Severinstraße) and runs through the centre. In 2026, roads on the route closed from about 05:30 on Severinstraße, the Hohenzollernring and Magnusstraße and from 07:00 elsewhere, reopening step by step after street cleaning. Several KVB tram lines were cut or diverted. The city sets the closures each year, so the plan is checked against that year's version.
In practice, a hotel inside the closed area is not served from its door on parade morning. The pick-up point moves outside the closures, and the return is timed after the roads reopen.
Movement planning notes
- The session opens on 11 November 2026 on the Heumarkt; the traditional opening there starts at 09:00.
- On parade day, several KVB tram lines are cut or diverted in the city centre (in 2026: lines 15, 16 and 17 in the south of the city and the east-west lines 1, 7 and 9 split between Neumarkt and Heumarkt).
- The Festkomitee reminds visitors that a strict glass ban applies at the Köln carnival.
- Köln/Bonn airport is about 16 km by road from the cathedral area (about 20 min in light traffic).
- The 2027 street-carnival dates are published by the Stadt Köln and KölnTourismus; Ash Wednesday (Aschermittwoch), 10 February 2027, ends the carnival.
- On Rosenmontag in 2026, streets on the parade route closed to traffic from about 05:30 (Severinstraße, Hohenzollernring and Magnusstraße) and from 07:00 elsewhere; they reopen step by step after street cleaning.
- Seated stands along the parade route (for example on the Hohenzollernring, the Heumarkt and the Burgmauer) are sold by the Festkomitee Kölner Karneval; an inclusion stand on the Hohenzollernring is booked through the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (LVR).
- In Köln, coaches may stop at the Gereonstraße coach stop in the city centre for at most 15 minutes with the engine off; the Buspark Köln on Kuhweg (Riehl) holds about 80 coaches and the city centre is about 10 minutes away from its nearest stop, Slabystraße.
Coach stops and the sticker
On normal days, coaches set down at the Gereonstraße stop for at most 15 minutes with the engine off, and wait at the Buspark Köln (Kuhweg, Riehl), with room for around 80 coaches. If the group rejoins the coach there, Stadtbahn 18 links the Slabystraße stop with the Hauptbahnhof in roughly 10 minutes. Whether Gereonstraße is usable on a carnival day depends on the closures, and the operator confirms it. The Umweltzone covers almost all of Cologne: green sticker for every vehicle, foreign coaches included.
For fly-in groups, Köln/Bonn Airport is some 16 km by road from the Dom, a run of about 20 minutes when traffic is light.
Planner questions
Can the coach drop us on the parade route?
No. Roads on the route close from early morning; the coach sets down outside the closed area.
Do you sell seats on the stands?
No. The Festkomitee Kölner Karneval sells stand seats; the inclusion stand on the Hohenzollernring is booked through the LVR. We plan transport to and from your stand.
Can guests bring drinks in glass?
No. The Festkomitee points out that a strict glass ban applies; mention it to guests before they step off the coach.
